Dark Moon by Michael Kibbe
Dark Moon is an original composition by Michael Kibbe commissioned by the National Cello Institute. This is a significant, four-movement work perfect for use in a full recital of cello ensemble music. With its many moods, driving rhythms, and varieties of tone colors (including the Intermezzo movement which is almost entirely pizzicato), this piece is a major work that will be extremely valuable to any serious cello ensemble group. While this piece is not for beginners, neither is it exceedingly difficult. Intermediate and advanced students will find it successful and rewarding.

Petite Marche by Michael Senturia
This charming piece was written specially for student players. None of the parts requires thumb position. Cello 1 gets into seventh position, Cello 2 and 3 each get as far as fourth position, and it is possible to play Cello 4 entirely in first position. Even though it is not too difficult, it sounds great and is fun to play!

Crosscurrents by Michael Senturia
Crosscurrents is another original composition by Michael Senturia. The notes are not too hard - only Cello 1 gets as high as the Harmonic A on the A-string and it is possible to play Cello 4 in first position (though some shifting is suggested in the editing). What makes this piece challenging is the rhythm - it is full of complicated rhythmic patterns and cross rhythms among the parts. This in itself makes the Crosscurrents a great teaching piece. It is very interesting and completely unique. Highly Recommended!

Slavonic Dance No. 8 by A. Dvorak (arr. Gruselle)
Carrie Lane Gruselle, one of our favorite arrangers, has produced this old favorite for cello quartet. Her thorough knowledge of cello technique means that her arrangements always lie well on the instrument and sound great. This Slavonic Dance is a perfect case in point: only Cello 1 requires thumb position and that lies in our "home base" spot on the half-string harmonics. Cello 2 and 3 get up to fourth position. Cello 4 might be played in first position but a couple of simple shifts are recommended. The piece is lively, fun and quite accessible to student groups.

Primeros Pasos by Michael O'Brian
This original composition is an exciting Tango. To cover all the divisi at least six players are required. Student groups really like this piece. It is popular with audiences, too!
